The Insanity of Trying to Be Helpful While Drowning(no judgement) :5 Ways to be kinder to yourself:

Updated: Dec 11, 2025

There’s a kind of quiet struggle I’ve witnessed over the past few years — where many of us are treading water, barely catching our breath, yet still determined to show up for everyone and everything we love.

I’ve been out at sea too. And what I’ve noticed is this: even when we’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or stretched thin, so many of us stay deeply committed to being “helpful.” To our families. To our work. To our communities. Very often even at the cost of ourselves.

The truth is, staying busy overworking and over-helping aren’t always just personality traits — they’re often trauma responses. Being busy feels safer. Being needed feels familiar. And while self-neglect is normalized (even rewarded) in our families and communities, it isn’t sustainable.

Here are 5 essential ways for us to pause & tend to ourselves the way we tend to others.

1.

**OBSERVE: Instead of judging yourself, observe what's driving you. What’s actually driving your urge to stay busy or be helpful right now?

2.

**NOTICE: what feels urgent versus what is truly essential.*Not everything needs your immediate energy. Being busy isn’t always strength — sometimes it’s protection.*

3.

** ASK: where you need support, not just where you can give it.  Keep pushing that support to the top of your daily priorities- a call, a firm bed time, or restricting access to your time & energy.

4.

**BUILD: in 1 small daily pause, even 5 quiet minutes for your breath, your body, or stillness is an act of resistance & care. Go for a walk, hydrate, begin the day with a song or listen to a meditation before you roll out of bed.

5.

**CONNECT: Share your overwhelm with someone you trust. Allow a loved one to support you and gently hold you accountable to prioritize your health.

Reference these few gentle reminders throughout your day:

You’re not meant to save the ship alone while going under.

More than ever, let’s take care of ourselves and each other.

The truth is: You deserve space. You deserve rest.

And you deserve support.
